Las Vegas, NV Coupons - Sources and General Tips

Coupons are available for Las Vegas gambling, dining (buffets, restaurants, fast-food), shows, attractions, spa treatments, drinks, car rental, nightclub cover charges, and transportation. Pick a legal Vegas activity and you can likely obtain a coupon for it. As expected, often the best coupon sources (defined as overall value) require varying yet modest levels of investment. If one performs a Google search for Las Vegas coupons they will be inundated with sources that may or may not provide legitimate coupon sources or coupons. Some of these search results will direct to sites that only offer hotel promo codes for room rates. These can still be worthwhile or potentially valuable but there might not be one coupon per se offered on the entire site.

The following outlines general coupon tips, sources for free coupons (some downloadable / self-printable), and sources for purchasable coupons for use in Vegas.

General Las Vegas coupon tips:

- Make certain of exactly what you're getting when obtaining coupons; specific property for redemption, denominations, specific uses, and length of time they're valid.

- Check expiration dates; There's some internet sites that are still offering Las Vegas coupons that expired in 2005.

- Plan and acquire as many selected coupons as possible before your trip (both "free" or purchased coupons) because this allows for more efficient planning and organization. Allow at least two weeks if workable for your situation. Follow up on all initial orders with e- mail / calls through available source contacts.

- After receiving the coupons, organize them with a system that allows for efficient visual ID and access; one system is to make a master list of all coupons that outlines specific property and specific coupon uses. Subsequently, place all coupons for a specific property / property group in a legal size envelope labeled for that property and specific coupons for redemption there. This simple coupon organization allows for quick and easy visual access. Also, consider alphabetizing these envelopes by property and securing with a large rubber band if you accumulate a large number of coupons. Note that some bulk coupon sources require that coupons are NOT to be removed from printed booklets until at time / locale of redemption; don't cut them out if you're directed not to as they won't be valid / redeemable!

- Multiple coupons from the same source are just another means to accrue further cost savings. Visitors have to plan and use common sense to redeem more than one identical coupon at the same locale. Many coupons have restrictions for use such as one coupon per customer per year. Use of family members and purchasing bulk coupons under another name are excellent means to get around this restriction. For gambling coupons, just be savvy enough to not attempt to redeem more than one identical coupon at the same table with the same dealer or pit crew. Just wait until a shift / personnel change occurs.

- Select coupon sources / coupons that best cover the activities you enjoy most.

- Note that very few coupons are available from the upper tier, "high-roller' properties or upper end shows and that many coupons are offered from off-strip locales. Offering coupons are a means for those casinos with less kitsch or demand to attract patrons and thereby compete with the big dogs. The current economic downturn in Vegas may change this traditional element regarding coupons and whom they are offered by. There is already a slight trend in this direction.

- Player's club members or visitors who have signed up for casino e-mail lists are in a good position to receive coupons attached to great room comp offers; this trend is already occurring.

The following are sources for either free printed or downloadable Las Vegas coupons. Note that many of the free coupons from these sources are available in many casino-hotel lobbies, rooms, or taxicabs after you arrive but there is an advantage to obtaining these prior to the trip as previously discussed regarding trip planning and organization of obtained coupons. Be advised that a few of the following sources require a subscription fee (single issue or annual) to obtain the so-called "free" coupons. These magazines do provide an additional Las Vegas info source, however.

Free or downloadable Las Vegas coupon sources / coupons :

- What's On Magazine; A large volume free coupon source. They have a page within their website that allows downloading and printing of free Vegas coupons. The website is being updated as I write this and is not functional presently (I assume they're renewing their 2009 coupon sources and will be available soon). Subscriptions for the magazine are available and you can obtain coupons from monthly issues (for a fee, of course).

- 24/7 Magazine; They offer many second-tier show 2 -for-1 discount coupons and tour discount coupons. There's a plethora of advertisements and assorted abbreviated guides for Las Vegas shows, buffets, gaming, etc. This source also publishes Vegas Values below.

- Vegas Values; This coupon booklet is actually the true coupon book offered from 24/7 Magazine above. Online visitors can get a free copy of Vegas current values for the above e-mail 24 / 7 subscription page.

- Las Vegas Leisure Guide; This source has coupons downloaded from their website. As I write, this source is also being updated / renewal coupon site and found their website which will be completed and functional in 1 or 2 weeks.

- Las Vegas insiders, there is very limitedlisting of downloadable coupons presently ( they may be updating as well but there's no such reference online). There is a link to the purchasable "Casino Perks" source listed below on this site.

- Vegas 4 Locals; This is a downloadable / printable free coupon source. This source is particularly strong for mid and low tier show coupon discounts but lacking in gambling coupons.

- Las Vegas Funbook; Most if not all of the free coupons here can be obtained from previously mentioned locales once in Vegas. The kicker here is that they charge $19.95 for shipping and handling if you want to obtain and organize them at home prior to the trip.

- Today In Las Vegas Magazine; This source offers printable free coupons including one for $5 off on a fully automatic machine gun rental. There are some more common coupons as well.

- Las Vegas major local newspapers, the Las Vegas Review Journal and Las Vegas Sun; At times these newspapers have free coupons or promotions and the Friday "Neon" section of The Review Journal is particularly noted for these.

The following depicts Las Vegas coupon sources / coupons that can be purchased for varying amounts.

Purchasable Las Vegas Coupons:

- Las Vegas Advisor (LVA); If you purchase one single coupon source for Las Vegas, this is our recommended site. You're required to become an LVA member and there's 2 options. A full membership costs $50.00 and you receive the Members Rewards Book (formerly Pocketbook of Values), a monthly printed newsletter via mail, and full online access to their site. An online membership costs $37.00 and you receive everything but the printed newsletter item (but you can access it online). There's an expansive amount of current and updated Las Vegas info such as news, forums, polls, guides (gaming, hotel - casinos, buffets, wedding chapels, etc.) and other pertinent issues. Do not remove the coupons from the booklet when you receive them as these are to be removed only when redeeming them at assorted venues in presence of staff at time of use. The booklet is easy to tote around and is alphabetized by property for easy use. All coupons are redeemable through December 2009.

- American Casino Guide (ACG) by Steve Bourie; If you gamble (in or outside Las Vegas) this is a decent coupon source (it includes coupons for activities other than gambling, too). This annually published gaming guide and coupon source has been around for years. I recently found an exceptional purchase price on this source at the Discount Book Sale website (link on the blog) for less than $8.00. The guide is also available at the American Casino Guide website ($12.95 )which also offers a Vegas Values Report section that provides weekly updated Vegas Casino - hotel deals and discount information. Within each ACG purchased in the coupon section, there is evidence of purchase, which must be removed and Las Vegas shows Las anywhere in redemption. Book ordered to remove the application from the Vegas coupons but you need the card redemption is not valid . ACG Place this card in a safe place, because it must redeem the coupons. Check the website for any changes in the ACG couponconditions throughout the year's use of available coupons (most coupons are redeemable until late December, 2009).

- Casino Perks; There are coupon book options here for separate dining, show, attraction, gambling packages or the complete deluxe version coupon booklet (which costs $49.95 plus shipping). It's an OK source but many of the coupons are available for free from other previously mentioned sources plus there aren't many gambling coupons. Coupons (valid for a year's time) are to be removed only at time of redemption.

- Las Vegas Entertainment Discount Book; For $16.95 you can order this somewhat offbeat coupon source. It doesn't offer many Las Vegas strip coupons and virtually no gambling coupons that I could locate. Some attraction coupons might render it worthwhile for some or for those who like to dine off-strip. Check coupon expiration dates prior to purchasing as some of the coupons appear outdated.

- eBay coupons; eBay offers lots of Vegas coupons up for bid. You'll find the good, mediocre, and questionable here. Check all sources and verify specifically what you'll be receiving prior to purchase. On perusal of the available coupons here, many are available for free but at least they're all in one place.

There is real cost-savings associated with coupon use in Las Vegas. Acquiring, organizing, and redeeming the coupons does involve some time, effort, and a modest investment for Most of the better value coupons. I figured that using coupons (a lot of good Matchplay Blackjack and two dining rooms for a special discount) saved / earned us of $ 600.00 on our recent trip of 9 days. There are, of course redeemed a thick stack of bills, but the results were more than worth it, from our perspective.

Cheers ..

Las Vegas vacation fun, Did You Know?

Fun stuff to amaze your friends on your flight

DID YOU KNOW?

The word "casino" originally meant "a public hall for music and dancing". By the second half of the 19th century, the term essentially meant a collection of gaming or gambling rooms. The classic example of a casino, and one of the world's best known, is "The Casino" at Monte Carlo, which opened in 1861.

In Las Vegas The Arizona Club was the first resort to open in Vegas March 31, 1906.

Las Vegas was incorporated into a city in June, 1911.

The first flight into Las Vegas was by two Blythe, California newspaper men on May 10, 1920.

Gambling Sandwich? Who invented what we refer to as a "sandwich"? So common we don't ever think that an English gambler, "The Earl of Sandwich" asked for meat between his bread so he wouldn't have to stop gambling merely to eat his lunch!...True!

Gambling: What a phenomenon! Ever wonder where all this gambling stuff got started?

The first accounts of gambling were in 2300 B.C. in China

Gambling was very popular in ancient Greece, even though it was "illegal".

Who were the first real "Tough Guys" to bet on? (Clue; Rome) Yep, Gladiators.

Dice: Who used dice first? Craps? Who thought that one up? The Egyptians. They carved dice from the anklebones of antelope to roll. Hence, "Roll them Bones"! The Egyptians wagered on a game originally called "atep" a game of guessing the number of upheld fingers.
( I wonder if this is also the origin of the now so common middle finger salute? Ed.)

Playing Cards are believed to have been invented in China and/or India sometime around 900 A.D. The Chinese are thought to have originated card games when they began shuffling paper money (another Chinese invention) into various denominations and combinations.

Baccarat is the principal of card games in the United Kingdom and most of Europe.

Blackjack is a fixture in all American Casinos.

Golf is believed to have started in Scotland (records show 1400 A.D.) but a stained glass window from 1340 A.D. shows a duffer throwing his club in the Loch! I guess the first golfer/gambler was a sore loser then, like today! {Ed.}

Ever wonder who the heck those "Kings" are on your deck of cards?

King of Spades - King David
King of Hearts - Charlemagne
King of Clubs - Alexander the Great
King of Diamonds - Julius Caesar

In doing my research to satisfy my curiosity I thought there might be others wondering about some of these hard to find answers. And at the same time enjoy a chuckle at this form of Las Vegas Entertainment.

Las Vegas Hotels - Then and Now

Las Vegas is all about illusion and transformation. While on the strip, and you're walking past palm trees or through a lush tropical gardens, keep in mind that this is the result of some exceptionally creative landscaping. It wasn't that long ago that this area was nothing but sand and cactus. The stark, barren desert provided the blank canvas for everyone from the first Spanish explorers, to Howard Hughes whose vision helped make Vegas what it is today.

Over the years, Las Vegas has seen a lot of change and most of these changes have been substantial. From the 22,500 acre Summerlin master planned community, to the mega-hotels on the Strip. When a Vegas developer begins a project, it often stakes a benchmark for future development, and each one is bigger and better than the next. This is particularly dramatic when new hotels are being constructed. Existing renovations are rare, and in most cases, the old must come down to replace the new.

The most common method of demolition is by implosion. Combine a few hundred pounds of dynamite, a small stage show and a few seconds later, no more hotel.

Here are some of the famous implosions featured on the Las Vegas strip over the years:

Oct. 27, 1993 - Dunes Hotel: Complete with an imposing 35 foot fibreglass sultan on its roof, the Dunes goes back to May 23, 1955. This desert-theme hotel was host to big name entertainers the likes of Frank Sinatra, and was the first club to offer the topless revue, Minsky's Follies. After being purchased by a Japanese millionaire in 1987 for $155 million, Steve Wynn snagged it for a cool $75 million in 1993 and after imploding, used the property to develop what is known today as "Bellagio."

Nov. 26, 1996 - Sands: Open on December 15, 1952, this was the site of the original Oceans 11 movie starring the rat pack. The Sands had many owners, but during the reign of Howard Hughes, the famous 500-room circular tower was added. The impressive Venetian Hotel has now replaced the Sands.

Dec. 31, 1996 - Hacienda: In spite of its proximity to the McCarran International Airport, the Hacienda had rough start and could never really compete with the larger resorts. It began as a modest 240 room hotel, and later expanded to 1,140 rooms, but remained closed for a couple years due to problems obtaining a gaming license. The Hacienda made a flashy exit on New Year's Eve of 1997 and was replaced by the Mandalay Bay. Its famous neon horse and rider sign, lives on at the intersection of Fremont Street and Las Vegas Boulevard.

April 27, 1998 - Aladdin: Originating as the Tally-Ho, then the King's Crown, the Aladdin was purchased and completely renovated for only $3 million dollars by Milton Prell. Probably its biggest claim to fame was hosting the wedding of Elvis & Priscilla Presley. After owner Prell suffered a stroke in 1972, he sold the hotel for $5 million. The new owners revamped the Aladdin, to the tune of $60 million, with the addition of a 19-story tower. After being imploded in 1998, a new and improved $1.4 billion Aladdin re-opened, but it too changed hands and is currently known as Planet Hollywood.

What to Wear in Las Vegas

If you're a first time visitor to the Sin City, choosing what to wear in Las Vegas can seem overwhelming. Suffice it to say, if you're worried about this topic, chances are your concerns are overblown. Knowing what to wear in Las Vegas is mostly common sense. But rest assured, regardless of your decision on what to wear in Las Vegas, you'll find a place to hang out that matches your style.

Lets start with the casinos. While it may seem counter to the town's old school image, it doesn't matter what you wear in Las Vegas - whether you're hanging out at the classiest Casino on the Strip (the Wynn or Bellagio), or a local's "only" hole in the wall downtown - what to wear in Las Vegas is all about what makes you feel at ease. On the casino floor, you'll see everything from the short/t-shirt/sandals look, to full out suits and ties. And somewhere between those extremes, you'll find the full gambit, from jeans to wife beaters. The days of everyone wearing their Sunday best and sipping martinis have long since past. Again, what to wear in Las Vegas comes down to you're comfortable in.

Now all that said, when choosing what to wear in Las Vegas, be sure to consider your night plans - while there's essentially all the flexibility in the world during the day, it is important to give your attire a bit more consideration at night. Unless you're friendly with the bouncers at some of the better clubs in town, its crucial that you conform to the mandated dress code. I've yet to see anyone run into trouble wearing a collared shirt, quality jeans, and leather shoes. Some clubs will allow designer t-shirts in-lieu of collared shirts (Pure for example), but just about every club is extremely strict on shoes. It doesn't matter if you're sporting a $400 pair of designer jeans, and a $300 shirt - if you're wearing sneakers (or shoes with white soles), you put your admission at jeopardy. Choosing what to wear in Las Vegas isn't hard - but it does require some planning.

Outside of that cautionary note, again, I would summarize it all by saying that what to wear in Las Vegas comes down to whatever you feel like wearing. More so than just about any other city, if you feel comfortable sporting it, then give it a go. Trust me - no one will say a word.

MTV Spring Break 2011 in Las Vegas

MTV Spring break is a dream of many students both in high school and college. The bad news is that not everyone gets to make that dream come true. The good news is that the trip can be affordable enough for even the most modest of students to be able to afford it. An MTV event can be one of the most exciting times of your life, and can make memories that will last a life time. If you want to catch MTV in Vegas, you will want to book your trip for March 6th through the 10th.

With that said, you can find deals that will keep more money in your pocket to gamble or buy drinks with.

You'll have an opportunity to get up close and personal with famous people from all over, as they help to celebrate with MTV, Las Vegas, and you. You will also get a chance to see and do everything Vegas has to offer whether it's Spring break or not, which says a lot. As they say, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

What to Expect During the MTV Spring Break

There will probably be a lot of commotion and mayhem going on during the week that MTV hosts the Las Vegas Spring break. It's one of the most popular events of the year, worldwide! Keep in mind that people will be coming in from all around the world to celebrate the occasion, and many will be coming early and leaving late. This is a great time to make new friendships, and to meet new people you wouldn't otherwise.

You can expect lots of alcohol and music, fun, craziness and plain old excitement. Contests, parties, after hour clubs and more can be scouted out on a daily basis. There are also theme rides, hiking adventures and sight seeing tours that might interest those who might want to spend some down time while in the area.

Remember, this is Las Vegas, so you will want to bring some extra cash along with you as no doubt, you will end up spending (or gambling) more than you probably planned for.
